How to Wash a Baby Blanket

How to Wash a Baby Blanket and Keep It Soft

A soft, clean blanket is one of the most-used items in your baby’s world, and one of the easiest to accidentally ruin in the wash. Here’s how to wash a baby blanket so it stays plush, breathable, and gentle on delicate skin, wash after wash.

Good news for new parents: every Thread the Word baby blanket arrives pre-washed and ready to use, so there’s no need for a “first wash” before your baby snuggles up. You only need to wash it once it’s actually dirty.

In short: wash your 100% cotton baby blanket in warm water (30°C / 86°F) on a gentle cycle with a small amount of mild, fragrance-free detergent. Skip fabric softener and bleach, add an extra rinse, never wring it out, and tumble dry on low or dry it flat.

What can damage a cotton baby blanket

Thread the Word blankets are made from 100% organic combed cotton in a soft, breathable knit. That natural structure keeps your baby cozy without overheating, and it lasts for years if you avoid three things:

  • High heat from hot water or a hot dryer, which shrinks cotton and makes it stiff.
  • Rough, high-spin cycles, which stretch the heavy, wet knit out of shape and cause pilling.
  • Fabric softener, which leaves a waxy film that stops cotton from breathing and absorbing moisture.

Infant skin is also more delicate than adult skin and absorbs whatever is left behind on fabric, so the goal is simple: get the blanket genuinely clean while leaving zero irritating residue. Less detergent and a good rinse does that better than more product ever will.

How to wash a baby blanket, step by step

  1. Pre-treat stains with cold water first. Always use cold, never hot; heat sets milk and formula stains permanently into the fibers. See the stain guide below.
  2. Turn it inside out and use a mesh laundry bag. This stops the knit snagging on zippers or stretching in the drum. Wash bright reds and pinks separately at first, as natural dyes can bleed.
  3. Set the water to warm, never hot. Keep it at or below 30°C (86°F) to protect the fibers from shrinking.
  4. Choose a gentle or delicate cycle. A low spin keeps the wet knit from losing its shape.
  5. Use a small amount of mild, fragrance-free detergent. Less soap rinses out more completely; more detergent just leaves residue trapped in the knit.
  6. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Neither is safe for a natural-cotton baby blanket.
  7. Add an extra rinse. A second rinse flushes out leftover detergent that can irritate baby’s skin, especially in hard-water areas.
  8. Never wring or twist it. Squeezing water out by twisting permanently warps the knit. Gently press instead.
  9. Tumble dry on low, or dry flat. Use the lowest heat or air setting. Drying flat on a rack is gentlest of all.

These steps match Thread the Word’s own care instructions: gentle machine wash in warm water, wash with similar colors, do not bleach, and tumble dry on low. If you ever need to iron, use the wool setting with plenty of steam and a pressing cloth.

How to keep a cotton baby blanket soft, naturally

You don’t need special products to keep cotton soft. Washing gently and rinsing well does most of the work. If your water is hard and the blanket ever feels stiff, two everyday pantry items help, and there’s no need to use both:

  • White vinegar. Add half a cup to the rinse compartment now and then. It cuts through detergent build-up and hard-water minerals, and the smell disappears completely as it dries.
  • Wool dryer balls. Toss a couple in the dryer to loosen the fibers, cut static, and speed up drying, with no chemical coating.

The one thing to avoid is commercial fabric softener and dryer sheets. They coat cotton in a waxy film that seals the breathable knit shut, stops the blanket absorbing drool and spit-up, and can irritate sensitive skin. Product labels even warn against using softener on children’s bedding.

How to remove common baby stains

Two rules for every baby stain on cotton: use cold water (hot water sets protein stains), and flush from the back rather than scrubbing, which just grinds the stain deeper.

StainHow to treat it
Formula, breast milk, spit-upCold-water rinse from the back, then dab with a plant-based enzyme spray for 15 to 30 minutes. A little baking soda helps with sour smells.
Diaper blowoutsScrape off solids, rinse from the back with cold water, then soak 30 minutes in cold water with a little liquid dish soap.
Baby food pureesRinse, wash normally, then let the damp spot sit briefly in direct sunlight to naturally lift the color.
Barrier cream and baby oilCover the dry stain with a little cornstarch for 30 minutes to absorb the oil, brush off, then work in one drop of dish soap before washing.

Drying and storing your baby blanket

  • Dry flat, not hanging. A wet knit hung by its corners stretches under its own weight. Lay it flat instead, out of direct sun and away from radiators.
  • Fold for storage. Hanging stretches the knit over time, so always fold and store flat, and make sure it’s fully dry to prevent mildew.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wash a baby blanket before first use?

It depends on the brand. As a rule, you should wash a new baby blanket before first use to clear any manufacturing dust or finishing residues that can irritate a newborn’s sensitive skin. The exception is trusted brands that wash during production: a Thread the Word blanket, for example, arrives already washed and ready to use, so you can skip the first wash and let your baby snuggle up straight out of the packaging.

Can I put a cotton baby blanket in the dryer?

Yes. Tumble dry a cotton baby blanket on the lowest heat or delicate setting to avoid shrinkage. For the softest result, take it out while slightly damp and lay it flat to finish drying. High heat is the main thing that damages natural cotton, so keep it low.

What detergent is best for washing a baby blanket?

Use a small amount of a mild, fragrance-free liquid detergent, ideally a plant-based one made for sensitive skin. Skip powders, bleach, optical brighteners, and anything heavily scented, since leftover residue can irritate a baby’s skin.

How often should you wash a baby blanket?

Wash a baby blanket only when it’s genuinely soiled, or roughly once a week with regular daily use. Over-washing wears down natural cotton fibers faster than everyday use, so spot-clean small messes between full washes.
